In one of the most exciting Test matches in recent times, India pulled off a thrilling 6-run victory against England in the final Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy 2025 at The Oval. The victory not only silenced critics but also showcased the resilience of the Indian cricket team, helping them draw the five-match series 2-2.
England started the final day needing just 35 runs to win with four wickets in hand. With Joe Root and Harry Brook batting, the English fans were already celebrating. But cricket, as always, had other plans.
Mohammed Siraj turned the game on its head with an incredible spell of reverse swing bowling. The pressure began to mount, and one by one, English wickets started to tumble. Within a span of just a few overs, England was bowled out for 367, falling short by six runs. The Indian players erupted in celebration.
Mohammed Siraj was the standout performer with 5 wickets in the second innings and a total of 9 in the match. His consistency, fire, and control under pressure earned him the Player of the Match award. His reaction after taking the final wicket — sitting down in disbelief — reflected the emotional weight of the moment.
This match marked a new peak in Siraj’s career and confirmed his place as India’s top red-ball fast bowler in the absence of Jasprit Bumrah.
Despite being injured, Chris Woakes walked out to bat with a shoulder sling. His brave decision won him admiration across the cricket world, but the Indian bowlers, especially Siraj and Ravindra Jadeja, did not let him settle. England’s middle and lower order collapsed under the weight of the situation.
England captain Ben Stokes later admitted that Woakes' injury was a turning point and praised India’s discipline under pressure.
India’s young captain, Shubman Gill, displayed maturity far beyond his age. With senior players like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Bumrah missing due to various reasons, Gill was under immense pressure. However, he responded with sharp field placements, calm decision-making, and inspirational leadership.
Gill also finished the series as the highest run-getter with 754 runs and several match-saving innings. His role as captain and lead batter will be remembered for a long time.
The Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, named after cricketing legends James Anderson and Sachin Tendulkar, concluded with both teams winning two Tests each. England had earlier won the first and third Tests, while India took the second and fifth.
Though the series ended in a draw, India’s win at The Oval is being seen as the highlight of the tour and a symbolic victory of spirit and teamwork.
Several former cricketers praised India’s victory on social media. Sachin Tendulkar, VVS Laxman, and Sunil Gavaskar hailed the team’s grit, especially highlighting the performances of Siraj and Gill. The match has now entered the list of unforgettable Indian Test wins on foreign soil.
This win marks the beginning of a new era for Indian cricket. With young players stepping up and leading from the front, the future of Indian Test cricket looks bright. The team’s ability to perform under pressure, especially in overseas conditions, is a big positive as they prepare for the upcoming World Test Championship cycle.
